Red Felt & Pins: Counter-Charms in Eastern Canada — Recording
The Eastern United States is known for its many traditions of folk magic which endure to this day, from Appalachian Granny Magic to Southern Hoodoo. We have seen an incredible return to these practices in modern days, which has led to conjure, folk magic, and hoodoo being discussed more publicly than ever before. Canada, however, is often left out of this conversation, despite its rich tapestry of folklore, beliefs, and folk magical practices. French Canada, in particular, is rarely spoken about, despite its strong and very traceable impact on Appalachian and Southern practices.
Red Felt & Pins: Counter Charms in Eastern Canada is a class exploring the various beliefs concerning witches and their spells in Eastern Canada, with a focus on the practical application of a variety of counter-charms found throughout Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Southern Ontario. We will of course discuss protective charms, but we will focus on the reversal of malefice, as well as divinatory means of exposing the offender.
Folk magic is the magic of the people, of those who had to be resourceful and cunning to find their place in the world. It is simple and effective. As such, we will of course explore the context of these charms and their applications in traditional culture and folklore, but we will also discuss how we may incorporate them into our own magical repertoire.
